With the introduction of iOS 11 in September 2017, Apple unveiled a new image format known as HEIC, based on the High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF) standard. This format presents a significant advantage over the decades-old JPEG format, offering approximately 40% more storage efficiency.
The iOS 11 system and HEIC format are compatible with a wide range of devices, including:
- iPhone:
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone SE
- iPhone 6 and 6 Plus
- iPhone 6s and 6s Plus
- iPhone 7 and 7 Plus
- iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X
- iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max
- iPad:
- iPad mini 2
- iPad mini 3
- iPad mini 4
- iPad (5th generation)
- iPad Air
- iPad Air 2
- iPad Pro 9.7
- iPad Pro 10.5
- iPad Pro 12.9 (1st generation)
- iPad Pro 12.9 (2nd generation)
- iPad Pro 11 (October 2018)
- iPad Pro 11 (March 2020)
- iPad Pro 12.9 (October 2018)
- iPad Pro 12.9 (March 2020)
- iPad Air (March 2019)
- iPad (September 2019)
- iPod touch:
- iPod touch (6th generation)
Despite this compatibility, not all listed devices can capture and save images and videos in HEIC format. The following devices support this functionality by default:
- iPhone:
- iPhone 7 and 7 Plus
- iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X
- iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max
- iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max
- iPad:
- iPad Pro 10.5
- iPad Pro 12.9 (2nd generation)
- iPad Pro 11 (October 2018)
- iPad Pro 11 (March 2020)
- iPad Pro 12.9 (October 2018)
- iPad Pro 12.9 (March 2020)
- iPad Air (March 2019)
- iPad (September 2019)
The restricted compatibility is attributed to the requirement for advanced processing capabilities provided by the A10 chip or newer. Such processors enable devices to natively support the saving of images and videos in the HEIF format.
The HEIC Convert app currently only functions on those devices capable of capturing content in HEIC format, converting existing JPG or JPEG images to HEIC while preserving resolution and associated GPS and EXIF data.
Please note that the app does not convert Portrait, PNG, GIF, or Live files at this time; movies also retain their original formats.
If you have edited JPG or JPEG images using Apple's Photos app, the HEIC Convert app will convert only the final image reflecting all applied filters and modifications. The original image will not be retrievable post-conversion.
Your iPhone should be backed up using iTunes or iCloud prior to employing our app to ensure data security.
